SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Dayna Polakoff will represent the NWT at the Canada Winter Games in Halifax, N.S., in February, however the Grade 11 student is not competing in any sporting events.

Polakoff, 16, was selected to attend the games as a cultural delegate with the National Artists Program, a countrywide initiative facilitated in the NWT by Sport North and the NWT Arts Council.

The program is designed to bring together young artists aged 16 to 22 from each territory and province and match them with professional artists who will mentor them for two weeks in their artistic discipline.

Polakoff has been paired with professional graphic designer Chris Dewolf from Fort Smith. Polakoff and Dewolf will collaborate on photography projects throughout the games, which run from Feb. 11 to 27.

Polakoff has shared her work in several Ontario magazines, and earlier this year one of her photographs appeared on the label of a Jones Soda bottle. Many of her images depict happy scenes of friends enjoying the beauty of the outdoors.

"Photography is what I love to do," Polakoff said. "I like capturing moments."

Polakoff is studying digital photography and traditional film photography at Sir John Franklin High School.

Les Cameron, Polakoff's dark room instructor, said Polakoff is an eager student.

"She has a nice eye and can see the compositions through the viewfinder," he said. "I like her enthusiasm. Photography requires three things: patience, persistence, and the pursuit of perfection. I think Dayna believes that and that should go a long way."

Polakoff is displaying some of her work tonight at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre as part of the Frozen Eyes, Open Minds photography exhibition. The exhibit is organized by the Frozen Eyes Photographic Society.

"It's pretty cool," Polakoff said.

Other Yk photographers in the show include Ozgur Oner, Pablo Saravanja, Pat Kane, Brent Reaney, and Dave Prichard. Student and amateur photographers from communities throughout the NWT are also featured.

The opening reception runs from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at the museum. The exhibit will remain on display until spring.

We have an exciting and unique career-building opportunity for one
Aboriginal youth (age 18-27) interested in gaining journalism skills at
this year's imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival. Learn how to cover
special events for one of Canada's leading news sources, and gain hands on
training and invaluable job skills.

imagineNATIVE is seeking one young, Aboriginal intern who will write about
their experience at this year's imagineNATIVE Festival. Individual will be
selected to provide coverage of the 5-day festival (Oct. 20-24 in
Toronto). The individual selected will work directly with selected mentors
from CBC and mediaINDIGENA who will be providing daily live coverage of
festival events. Additionally, the selected intern will be linked to a
CBC.ca staff that will oversee and edit their daily coverage. The selected
correspondent will be provided with an all-access pass to the festival,
and be assigned to cover select special events and screenings at the
festival. Interviews with artist will be arranged, and coverage will be
posted daily on the CBC.ca/arts and CBC.ca/aboriginal websites.

Requirements:

* Applicants must be between the ages of 18-27;

* Applicants must be of Aboriginal background (from anywhere in the
world);

* Applicants must be living in Toronto, or be in Toronto for the
duration of the festival (October 20-24, 2010) -- please note, subsidy
will not be provided for out of town applicants;

* Applicants must have a demonstrated interest in journalism, writing,
or film.

Application Process:

* Send your personal bio along with up to a one page explanation of
why you should be selected as the imagineNATIVE Correspondent for CBC
News;

* Send your resume/CV outlining your experience in journalism and/or
film;

* Send a .jpg image of yourself (if possible);

* Send your complete contact information, including email, mailing
address, and phone number. Please also include your Indigenous
affiliation.

Applications must be received by no later than Friday October 8th, 2010.

Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography is a non-profit artist-run centre committed to the advancement of photographic art. We encourage the submission of exhibition proposals from emerging, mid-career and established artists and curators who are innovative in their use of materials and approach to subject matter. Gallery 44 views photography within the larger context of contemporary artistic practices and relevant cultural issues in today's society.

Submission Guidelines
Please submit the following:

1. A maximum of twenty slides or digital images (CD must be readable on MAC OSX) representing a recent body of work or a specific project. Digital images should be: RGB, jpeg format no larger than 1024 x 768 pixels at 300 dpi. They should be numbered 01 to 20 (01_tree, 02_house, 03_car etc.) Gallery 44 does not accept original artwork.
2. An image list indicating title, year, medium and dimensions.
3. An artist's statement, curatorial statement, or other written description.
4. A physical description of the proposed exhibition, including the number of works, the space required and any unusual installation requirements.
5. A curriculum vitae, resume or biography of the artist(s) and/or curator (including all artists if it is a curated exhibition).
6. A self-addressed envelope (SASE) with sufficient return postage. Without an SASE we will not return submission packages and will dispose of submission materials appropriately.

Gallery 44 welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with other arts and community organizations. Please contact us to discuss your project.

Gallery 44 will take reasonable care with submission materials; however, we cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss to original photographic prints. Gallery 44 does not accept submissions by fax or email.

Late submissions will not be accepted. Submissions must be postmarked by the deadline. Please clearly label your envelope with the call that you are applying for. Artists are paid in accordance with the CARFAC Fee Schedule.

 The Ansel Adams Fellowship at the Center for Creative Photography
The Center for Creative Photography invites proposals for the 2010 Ansel Adams Research Fellowship. This program is designed to promote and support research in the Center's photograph, archive, and library collections. Among the Center's treasures are the complete archives of more than forty major photographers including Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Wynn Bullock, Aaron Siskind, Frederick Sommer, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, W. Eugene Smith, and Garry Winogrand. See the Collections and Archives pages for additional information.
 
Our goal is to promote new knowledge about photography, photographic history, and photographic theory. Through the Center's support of scholars, training of students, and dissemination of new scholarship, the Center for Creative Photography works to ensure the growth of photographic history as a discrete field in intellectual history. Fellowship applications are evaluated within this context.

Ansel Adams Research Fellowships are awarded for projects that require an extended period of research in the collections of the Center. Awards in amounts up to $5000 will support two to four weeks of study at the Center. Multiple awards may be given depending on the applications received. Scholars at any point in their careers and from any discipline are encouraged to apply.
 
Application process: Send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and a brief statement detailing the candidate's research interests. Attention will be given to the candidate's statement concerning the value of the Center's holdings in investigating those interests. Applications must be postmarked or sent via fax or email by October 29, 2010. The Ansel Adams Research Fellows are announced by the end of December and residencies may begin in January 2011. Scheduling the residencies must be done with the approval of Center staff.
