2009 Banff Adventure Photography Workshop

Workshop Dates: September 25 – 28, 2009

Mountain Culture at The Banff Centre and the National Geographic Expeditions Council offer you the opportunity to work alongside National Geographic photographers Gordon Wiltsie and Bill Hatcher, and award-winning adventure photographer, Alec Pytlowany, in both outdoor and classroom sessions during the upcoming Banff Adventure Photography Workshop.

Intense and interactive seminars will be interspersed with fieldwork and critique. A maximum of 25 participants will be accepted to the workshop.

Friday, September 25: Welcome reception; orientation to the program

Saturday, September 26: Lectures and fieldwork

Sunday, September 27: Fieldwork; Critique of field performance

Monday, September 28: Critique of field performance; screening of the "best of the workshop"

In order to limit this seminar to photographers with an existing knowledge of the fundamentals of photography, applicants will need to submit a portfolio of 5 images for review. Please visit our website for information on submitting your portfolio.

All participants are expected to bring digital cameras and laptops with appropriate software to manage their digital images. There will be no film processing available on campus.

Thanks for your interest in this issue here in the NWT.... as a long time member of Canadian Artists Representation / le Front des artistes canadiennes and the Canadian Artists Representation Copyright Collective, this issue, the lack of payments to artists by the Government of the Northwest Territories for their exhibition rights and the lack of education for artists on all of their artistic rights is of great concern to me, especially as the government's Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment is mandated to assist our artists in the development of the arts sector in the territory

A little background....

About four years ago, when I lived in Fort Smith NWT, The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) http://www.iti.gov.nt.ca/artscrafts/ held its first (I believe) public workshop concerning its NWT Artists Database http://www.nwtarts.com/NWTArtist.aspx and during that workshop it became clear that they required a release for any images images an artist would contribute to their own entry in the database that would release it, automatically, for any use by any sector of the territorial government. The lady presenting this workshop was / is Carla Wallis Manager, Arts & Fine Crafts... CARLA_WALLIS@gov.nt.ca (867) 920-6130 who also is listed as serving as NWT Film Commissioner (867) 920-8793 in the governments phone directory at

When I queried this provision of the release, pointing out that would automatically remove any potential for licensing (and realizing income from) these submitted images to any NWT government department (especially the tourism campaigns run by their department) I was told that their lawyer had told them that this was the only way that they could do this and if I had a problem with it I should talk to their lawyer... I did do this and the lawyer simply said... in effect, that I did not know what I was talking about, and as a lawyer, this person knew more than I did and I had the choice of not participating... but the release could not change because it represented the requirements of the law.

I suggested to the group that they should go to the CARFAC and Copyright Collective websites to learn about their rights as artists.

About a year ago, here in Yellowknife, Ms Wallis gave a very similar presentation and the same release form with the same conditions attached was included in the package of information and I brought up the same question concerning the apparent rights grab by the territorial government... this time there were several other artists in the audience who were also equally concerned with the "license" and the potential loss of revenue to the submitting artists.... The reception our queries received was as frigid as an Arctic night in February and we were once again told the same platitudes expressed to me in Fort Smith.... One individual was even motivated to bring it to the attention of CARFAC as I had also done..

This brings me to the most recent ITI presentation at the Great Northern Arts Festival...
Well... four years later... same old same old... no change... still the same rights and income grab from a government department that is supposed to be helping artists with the same defensive attitudes of the department's position.

Any help you and CARFAC can offer to the artists of the Northwest Territories to protect their rights and incomes against what seems to me as a rip-off, would, I'm certain, be welcome by the artists... and any understanding / implementation of policies recognizing / protecting these rights you and CARFAC might be able to help ITI and the GNWT with would, I'm also certain, be greatly appreciated by the artists and their heirs.

Young journalists invited to enter Earth Journalism Awards Competition

Young and inspired writers, bloggers, journalists, musicians, and others who have a story to tell about climate change are invited to enter the Earth Journalism Awards Competition. Internews has created the MTV Positive Change award for youth aged 18-28. Submissions may be made in any format or mix of formats, including video, audio, photography, script, or music, and should express how society is adapting, or needs to adapt, to the threat of climate change. Entries will be accepted until September 7, 2009.

Frozen Eyes Photographic Society would like to invite you to view the work of students from K'alemi Dene School @ the Greenstone Building

The Frozen Eyes Photographic Society http://www.frozeneyes.com/ would like to invite you to view the work of students from K'alemi Dene School currently showing in the atrium of the Greenstone Building.

Springing from the experience of photographic mentoring for youth during the Arctic Winter Games of 2008, the Society has embarked on a program of education for youth around the Territory. To date this year, in addition to K'alemi Dene School, the Native Women's Centre, Open Skies Festival in Fort Simpson and the YK75th celebrations have had mentorship programs with another in Fort Laird in early July. Other projects are in discussion.

Over its 74-year product life, photographers have used Kodachrome to shoot
images of President John F. Kennedy's assassination, family picnics, and a
number of other subjects. This week, the Kodak company announced that it
will effectively discontinue production of this type of film at the end of
2009. Like many other styles of film, Kodachrome has experienced major
competition from digital cameras. Kodachrome reached the height of its fame
in the 1950s and 1960s when it was the gold standard for many photographers
around the globe. Currently, only one commercial lab in the world processes
the film, and the Kodak company noted in a press release that revenues from
Kodachrome represent less than one percent of all total sales. The company
is preparing a fitting tribute by having noted photojournalist Steve McCurry
shoot one of the last rolls of Kodachrome film. After the film is developed,
the images will appear in the George Eastman House museum in Rochester, New

The Water Integrity Network (WIN) http://www.waterintegritynetwork.net/ is
sponsoring a photography contest for photographers around the world, which
asks the question: what does water integrity mean and how can you
visualize it? The deadline for submission is June 28 at midnight.

Entrants can submit up to three photos visualizing either the impact of corruption and/or the effort of anti-corruption work in the water sector. Each one should have a short conceptualized caption with a maximum of 30 words per caption.

A jury will select the winning photo and award the final prize of a trip to the Stockholm World Water Week 2009, from August 16 to 22, including a return economy class fair, visa/insurance fees, registration fees, per
diems and accommodation for the entire week.

Up to ten applicants will be considered as finalists by the WIN. All
photos by finalists will be displayed at the 'Water Integrity - Visualized' photo exhibition at Stockholm World Water Week .

The home of the N.W.T. Mining Heritage Society - a group that is dedicated to preserving and promoting the mining heritage of the Northwest Territories.

The current focus of the group is the preservation of the A-Shaft Area of Giant Mine, located on the outskirts of the territories' capital, Yellowknife. The mine is in the process of closing down after more than 50 years of continuous operation - which is a long time for a gold mine.

The Grange Prize, launched in February of 2007, is a unique partnership
between the Art Gallery of Ontario and Aeroplan. It brings together a
public institution and a private enterprise whose common goal is to engage
the public in a dialogue about contemporary photography.

Each year, The Grange Prize recognizes the work of Canadian and
international contemporary photographers, awarding $50,000 CAD to a winner
chosen through an online public vote from among two Canadian and two
international artists.

The winner of The Grange Prize is announced at an awards ceremony held at
the Art Gallery of Ontario each spring.

The Grange Prize works each year with a different partner museum in a
country other than Canada. This partner museum launches the Prize in that
country, and helps garner public interest and enthusiasm for the four
artist candidates. All four artists participate in residencies as part of
the Prize program, and are featured in exhibitions both at the AGO and in
the partner country. The Grange Prize partner museum for 2009 is Centro de
la Imagen in Mexico City.

In 2009, the AGO entered into a cultural partnership with the Mexican
government. The Consulate General of Mexico assisted The Grange Prize in
establishing the curatorial panel and facilitated the relationship with
Centro de la Imagen. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico will also
ensure that The Grange Prize is promoted through their embassies and
consulates around the world.

A friend called me the other day with a digital photo problem. "I just printed a photo on good paper, and it doesn't look like what's on the monitor," he complained. "Why not? How can I get them to match?"

My buddy's problem stems from the fact that the two output devices--the printer and monitor--are calibrated differently. If you want what's on the screen when you edit a photo to resemble what comes out of the printer, then you need to correct one or the other so they're in agreement. It's easier to adjust the monitor (printers don't come with calibration tools), so that's what we'll do.

If you don't mind spending money, there are a few programs designed to help you calibrate your monitor. Pantone's OptiCal is the mother of all such programs--but at around $200, it's probably better-suited for true graphics professionals. LightSurf Technologies' $50 Colorific is a much more affordable color-matching and monitor calibration system

Artist: Top Level 7 (equivalent to "Heaven" in Christian mythology)

This is the highest level.

An artist fixes his imagination in a tangible form called a photograph. He captures the spirit of place or person, real or imagined, in this photograph and the viewer responds to this.

Whore: Level 6

A whore is an artist who sells his soul by accepting money or drugs for his art.

By lowering himself to this level his vision is compromised.

Amateur: Level 5

People who earn less than half of their income from photography are amateurs. This has nothing to do with the quality of their photography.

Snapshooter: Level 4

This is my mom and most people. These people want memories, as opposed to photographs or cameras.

Professional: Level 3

A professional photographer is a person who earns his entire living (100%) from the sale of photographs.

Rich Amateur: Level 2

These are amateurs who, by having too much money, buy lots of equipment which can fetter their freedom of expression. They are mostly men, and many are old or retired.

Equipment Measurbator: Bottom Level 1 (equivalent to "Hell" in Christian mythology)

These men (and they are all men) have no interest in art or photography because they have no souls. Lacking souls they cannot express imagination or feeling, which is why their images, if they ever bother to make any, suck.

These folks have analysis paralysis and never accomplish anything.

Online Expert or Armchair Photographer: Level 0 (these guys don't take pictures so they aren't a level of photographer.)

This level never existed before the internet, because cameras were never as exciting as sports cars or missiles for men to research.

Official White House photos are now officially in the public domain, thanks to a licensing change made quietly over the weekend by the Obama administration and the photo-sharing site Flickr.

The White House began posting striking photos of President Barack Obama from its official photographer Pete Souza to the Web 2.0 site in early May. The White House chose to license them using the ultra-liberal Creative Commons Attribution license that lets people reuse, reprint and remix the photos just as long as they credit the original photographers.

But as Creative Commons, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and other online commenters noted, that license won't work — even for Obama's official photographer — because government works can't be copyright.

Someone must have been listening, because sometime over the weekend, the licenses changed, and now the photos are labeled "United States Government Work" and link to an explanation on copyright.gov. The White House, however, continues to use the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license for all third-party content published on the www.whitehouse.gov site.

The change marks a first for Flickr, which to date has not had a license for government works, other than a "No Known Copyright Restriction" license that is used on photos from its Commons project, which includes photos from some of the world's greatest museums and libraries. Flickr, a Yahoo-owned property, did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the change and whether the license will be available for other portions of the federal government.

As for ordinary web surfers, there is still no way in Flickr to add your work to the public domain — the Attribution license is still the closest you can get. Being president, it seems, still has its privileges.

Official White House photos are now officially in the public domain,
thanks to a licensing change made quietly over the weekend by the Obama
administration and the photo-sharing site Flickr.

The White House began posting striking photos of President Barack Obama
from its official photographer Pete Souza to the Web 2.0 site in early
May. The White House chose to license them using the ultra-liberal
Creative Commons Attribution license that lets people reuse, reprint and
remix the photos just as long as they credit the original photographers.

But as Creative Commons, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and other
online commenters noted, that license won't work — even for Obama's
official photographer — because government works can't be copyright.

Someone must have been listening, because sometime over the weekend, the
licenses changed, and now the photos are labeled "United States Government
Work" and link to an explanation on copyright.gov. The White House,
however, continues to use the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license for
all third-party content published on the www.whitehouse.gov site.

The change marks a first for Flickr, which to date has not had a license
for government works, other than a "No Known Copyright Restriction"
license that is used on photos from its Commons project, which includes
photos from some of the world's greatest museums and libraries. Those
photos include ones from the Library of Congress, for instance, that never
were copyright since they were made or paid for by the federal government.
