The Myth
The megapixel myth was started by camera makers and swallowed hook, line and sinker by camera measurebators. Camera makers use the number of megapixels a camera has to hoodwink you into thinking it has something to do with camera quality. They use it because even a tiny linear resolution increase results in a huge total pixel increase, since the total pixel count varies as the total area of the image, which varies as the square of the linear resolution. In other words, an almost invisible 40% increase in the number of pixels in any one direction results in a doubling of the total number of pixels in the image. Therefore camera makers can always brag about how much better this week's camera is, with even negligible improvements.
This gimmick is used by salespeople and manufacturers to you feel as if your current camera is inadequate and needs to be replaced even if the new cameras each year are only slightly better.

Slogans is a visual deconstruction of advertising slogans, a literal and metaphorical illustration of the disintegration and loss of meaning of information in the contemporary "media landscape." Appropriating text from a series of familiar print advertisements — "Choose Your Weapon," "Play to Win," "Talk is Cheap" — Muntadas enlarges, digitizes and overlays words until they devolve into abstract mosaics. Accompanied by a banal muzak soundtrack, this display of text as image demonstrates advertising's insidious transformation of language into empty signifiers.

Photojournalists and amateur photographers can now submit images that
"challenge conventional understanding of 'femininity' and
'masculinity' and help to break the mold of male-female 'divide'" to a
photo competition.
The World Association for Christian Communication (WACC) is hosting
the photographic competition, "Portraying Gender." Winners will be
awarded cash prizes that range from US$500 (first prize) to US$200.
The competition is an effort of WACC in collaboration with the online
photo service Flickr. To be submitted, photos must be uploaded on
Flickr.

Therapy Dog Program

The Therapy Dog Program is run by St. John Ambulance in Yellowknife. Any dog of sound temperament can become a Therapy Dog, regardless of size or breed, once they pass the St. John Therapy Dog test. All volunteers must be able to make the commitment of time to visit on a regular basis. They must also be willing to participate in a screening process, which includes a police records check.

John Lodge has been decorating the spruce trees on his front lawn for more than 12 years. His wife Jan is responsible for the raindeer. The trees are so large now that John had buy more lights and use a ladder to put them on the trees.

3912 Ragged Ass Road, the home of Trevor and Joanne Teed. The Teeds have been in Yellowknife two years. Trevor, Joeanne and their son D'arcy have spent over 90 hours so far this season installing over five thousand lights with the help of Noel Michel of Lutsel Ke and their neighbour Mark Rocher's bucket truck to get the lights into the trees. Trevor says he's only about halfway through his lighting plan and is trying to inspire his neighbours to follow his lead and light up Ragged Ass Road with Christmas colours.

New York City area photographers achieved a victory of sorts in March against
Metropolitan Transportation Authority police officers when the New York Civil
Liberties Union threatened a lawsuit against MTA if their officers continued to
try to stop photography on the subways, Long Island Railroad, and Metro North
trains. The threatened suit brought about a written concession from MTA's
general counsel that there is "no ban on photography," but not until after
several photographers were harassed and threatened with arrest.
Over the past couple of months there has been an increase in the number of
complaints from photographers, both press and civilian, alleging that police -
mostly MTA officers - were threatening to arrest them for taking pictures in
public places, telling photographers that "photography is illegal."
The NYCLU wrote to MTA following the string of complaints, to which MTA
responded by requesting that "any photo activities get their 'prior
approval.' "
NPPA Region 2 associate director Todd Maisel, who is also vice president of the
New York Press Photographers Association and a staff photographer at the New
York Daily News, responded to MTA officials by saying that he "would never seek
their approval to take photographs in a public place."
... Catherine Rinaldi, general counsel and deputy executive director for MTA,
conceded in a March letter to photographers that there is "no ban on
photography
in the Long Island Railroad or the Metro North Transit system." The concession
came after NYCLU attorneys wrote to MTA demanding that they explain why MTA
officers were threatening photographers with arrest for taking pictures in
public areas of the transit system.
