Bertha BRITDOC Documentary fund open [Worldwide]

Documentary journalists can apply for a grant ranging from UK£5,000-50,000 (about US$7,847-US$78,472).

The Bertha BRITDOC Fund for Journalism is an international film fund dedicated to supporting long-form feature documentaries of a journalistic nature.

The fund seeks films that break stories, expose injustice and bring attention to unreported issues and cameras into regions previously unseen. Due to the investigative nature of long-form films, the fund seeks filmmakers with a journalistic background.

The fund supports in-depth research & development, production funding for longitudinal investigations, editorial support for long-form documentary structure, hostile environment training, emergency transportation and legal advice.

Funding is awarded on a rolling basis.

We are looking for films that break the important stories of our time, expose injustice, bring attention to unreported issues and cameras into regions previously unseen.

This new fund recognises such films are often delicate and protracted, making them difficult to fund. With a mission to enable in-depth analysis of issues through long-form investigative filmmaking, we are particularly looking to work with filmmakers with a journalistic background or those who are collaborating with journalists.

It is key that the journalistic intent is embedded within the film itself rather than the film simply being about a journalist or journalistic institution.

It's natural for artists to want to make history - for their work to be known and recorded. It's a very different goal for artists to participate in the recording of history in general. The production of documentation (of art and as art) is a practice that intertwines and dialogues with the reportage of current events. When artists use documentation in their practice, they construct an interpretation of their artwork or subject. The choice of medium and distribution method of art documentation then determines its trajectory into the world and into the future. The relation between documentation and its subject is more complicated than ever: an installation is livestreamed, net art leaves a constant digital trace, everyday activities are documented as a performance for video. How might the methods of the documentation and distribution of art affect the recording and framing of history made today? How will today's history be read tomorrow?

Seeking proposals from artists working in (but not limited to) video, film, interactive art, net art, performance or installation. Artists are asked to propose a layered work that involves an "original" gesture, and documentation of or through that gesture. Original gestures may take place anywhere outside of the gallery (ex: site-specific installation, distant geographic location, private performance) and should take place within the dates of the exhibition. Documentation of this gesture will be produced by the artist and mounted in the gallery before the closing of the exhibition. Proposed projects should consider the exhibition format. The use of documentation should be a central aspect of the work. Questions or clarifications are welcome at the contact address below.

This exhibition is curated by Maggie Flynn for Le Labo's curatorial mentorship program under the guidance of Alissa Firth-Eagland. Le Labo (http://www.lelabo.ca) is an artist-run centre with a mandate to produce and promote francophone media art and interdisciplinary projects. This project will accept proposals from both francophone and non-francophone artists. The exhibition will take place in April 2012. Artist fees will be paid and modest travel costs may be accommodated.

Canadian Film Institute and International Polar Year Seek Films that Focus on Arctic and Antarctic Regions

The Canadian Film Institute (CFI), in partnership with the International Polar Year (IPY) Federal Program Office, is officially seeking entries for the Polar Film Festival. The two-day moving image event is a featured presentation of the IPY 2012 Conference: From Knowledge to Action, held April 22-27, 2012, in Montréal, Quebec, Canada.

The Polar Film Festival will celebrate the rich diversity of the Polar Regions, as well as examine the many challenges and world-wide implications they face in the 21st Century and onward. As a follow-up to the IPY Film Festival presented by the CFI in 2009, this event highlights the efforts of filmmakers from around the world who approach the Polar Regions from many different industries, research interests, artistic sensibilities, and political perspectives.

The CFI welcomes all films that explore issues and activities of particular relevance to the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Any genres of film and video practice - documentary, research, industrial, fiction, activist - from all Polar Regions are encouraged for submission.

Video submissions can be mailed directly to the CFI as a playable DVD or Blu-Ray disc. Digital entries may be submitted via direct download link, or any common digital media format such USB drive or DVD-ROM. Entrants are asked to include production credits, digital stills, director bios and filmography, contact information, and other relevant materials with their submissions.

Scope: Gather footage of the Team NWT Arctic Winter Games Snowboarding and Wrestling Trials Jan 28/29 (exact times/locations TBD). Conduct interviews with participants at each location (Cable 20 will help arrange interviews and notes on questions). For each event record highlights of the competition, two talking-heads interviews (if possible), ample b-roll.

Footage will be edited by Community TV for 3-minute story in an Arctic Winter Games magazine-style news show. The footage will be used to create stories similar to the Dene Games Trials story in this episode:

Make a short film for imagineNATIVE 2012

Do you have a great idea for a 5 minute short film? Explore 16mm filmmaking through LIFT's workshops, equipment and facilities (other mediums may be employed). Shoot and edit your ideas to film, and see them on screen at the 13th annual imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival, which will take place in Toronto from October 17–21, 2012!

You will be provided with a LIFT Membership, and be eligible to enroll in any training workshop offered during their Winter and Summer 2012 calendar. You will be paired with LIFT's knowledgeable staff and a specially selected mentor to help you through your various development, production and post-production stages. imagineNATIVE will subsidize some additional costs related to your project, and facilitate aspects of your post-production stages.

Please note: Projects must be realistic in scope and subject matter as they must be completed and transferred to tape by September 25, 2012.

The participant will receive the opportunity to use LIFT's extensive 16mm production equipment and facilities for their film. As every film is unique, equipment and facilities access will be established in the development phase (past equipment and facilities budgets have ranged from $500–$5,000). Any additional equipment, facilities, and production costs will be the responsibility of the participant.

imagineNATIVE will provide a $500 bursary towards production costs and 1,200 feet of film stock will be provided by Kodak. Assistance with transferring and processing will also be provided (approximately a $750 value). All other associated costs are to be covered by the participant.

Eligibility Criteria:

    This call is open to Indigenous (First Nation, Métis, Inuit, other international Indigenous) candidates living in or near the GTA only
    Preference will be given to artists who have not had the opportunity to work in film (Note: you do not have to be a youth, but youth may also apply)
    Candidates must commit to attending the LIFT training workshops from March–August 2012. We strongly encourage applicants who are deadline driven and self-starters.
    You must live in Toronto or within commuting distance from the city in order to access LIFT workshops and equipment. Travel subsidy and cost of living are NOT covered by this mentorship.

Hi-Rez Storytelling is a program designed to support emerging to mid-career Aboriginal filmmakers and new media screen-based writers and producers. During the course of this unique two-week residency at The Banff Centre, participants will develop a project they bring with them to the program, write for multi-platform environments, and learn digital strategies that provide a continuum for contemporary storytelling forms.

Hi-Rez Storytelling will provide one-on-one mentorship and guidance with outstanding faculty and guest speakers. At the end of residency, participants will leave with a developed story, plans for production, and fundraising and/or pitching plans. Participants may be storytellers of any genre who want to explore how to tell and visualize their story, and who wish to explore an Indigenous esthetic in storytelling and interactivity.

on its pan-Canadian consultations. The Canadian Conference of the Arts was the first of five cultural organizations* to appear before the Committee. This report comprises 53 proposals targeting four areas: federal finances, businesses, communities and individuals.

In the introduction, the Committee describes arts and culture as one of the factors contributing to the strength of a community. Additionally, three pages out of this 77-page report are dedicated to arts and culture, thereby placing the sector on par with the principal players in the Canadian economy. This chapter presents a very good summary of the presentations made by witnesses but, unfortunately, the Committee's report did not take up any of the recommendations put forward by the CCA and other witnesses

In its minority report, the Official Opposition (NDP) dedicates only one paragraph to culture.

Strengthen Arts and Culture: According to the Conference Board of Canada, for every $1 of real value added GDP produced by Canada's cultural industries, roughly $1.84 is added to the overall real GDP. The Federal government should establish a tax credit program to stimulate production of the arts and maintain funding of CBC/Radio-Canada at the 2010 level ($1.1 billion) and index it annually to inflation .

The Liberal Party of Canada makes no mention of arts or culture in its supplementary opinion.

We have examined certain of the report's recommendations in order to identify possible actions.

In the section on tax reform, the report includes a paragraph stating the CCA's request for income averaging but omits any such recommendation. However, it might be possible to relaunch the debate if the following recommendation is retained:

Another proposal is worthy of attention: "that the federal government continue to open up new markets to Canadian goods and services by working toward the completion of trading agreements with foreign governments, and also working to eliminate trade barriers involving the US-Canada border." Unfortunately, the Committee is mute on the CCA's proposal to dedicate, as soon as possible, $40 million to the development of internal and foreign markets for our artists, creators and cultural industries.

That the federal government convene an expert panel to review, modernize and simplify the federal corporate tax system

The CCA will follow the progress of this last proposal that could relate to the opening of the telecommunications or publishing markets to foreign ownership. It is certain that the government maintains its desire to undertake free-trade negotiations with several countries and regions of the world, with the European Union and Asia-Pacific region being particularly targeted.

FROZEN EYES PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY LAUNCHES NWT-WIDE YOUTH PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT

The Frozen Eyes Photographic Society is officially launching a special Northwest-Territories-wide photographic leadership development program for NWT youth with an ability and interest in photography. Funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage's Youth Take Charge program, this new initiative is looking for 12-15 youth from across the territory.

The project consists of two phases. The first is a professionally instructed week-long workshop in Yellowknife March 18-25. This course will further introduce students to the art of photography and help build their portfolios. In the second phase, participants from the first workshop will travel to a community other than their own to work with a Frozen Eyes mentor and help run a photo workshop for local youth while sharing their knowledge with their peers. The best images from these workshops will be used in a travelling exhibit of NWT youth photography to be shown in northern and southern communities and online.

Interested participants between ages 13 and 19 are required to submit a portfolio by January 16, 2012. Applications should include 5-10 digital photos (jpeg format), a resume, a reference and a brief letter describing why the applicant is interested in participating in the programme.

FEPS was initiated in 2007 after a group of Yellowknife artists developed a photography mentorship program for the Arctic Winter Games. Since forming a society in 2008, FEPS has generously received funds from BHP Billiton Canada, the NWT Arts Council, the City of Yellowknife and now the Department of Canadian Heritage. These funds allowed the group to hold photographic workshops with youth in communities across the NWT, as well as exhibits in Toronto and at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre in Yellowknife. The hope is participating youth leave equipped with confidence, leadership skills and a strong knowledge of the technical and creative sides of photography.

WAMP http://www.wamp.ca/ is accepting treatments/script proposals for short videos. Pitch Your Idea.

Project objectives:

To provide an opportunity for beginner and intermediate media-makers to learn more specific elements of independent media production, while producing a first work.

To promote video production within the NWT and provide means for members to produce independent Media artworks.

Submission Deadlines: December 7th, February 7th, May 7th, August 7th

Ideal Shoot Dates: March, June, September, December

WAMP will be accepting short video scripts and treatments to produce! The selection committee will select 4 short videos to produce that either incorporates one of the four seasons thematically or is produced during one of the four seasons in the NWT. Preference will be given to projects that demonstrate artistic merit and/or a well-developed unique story.

Where appropriate, efforts will be made to pair the awarded script/ filmmaker with a suitable mentor for the production as well as provide opportunities where WAMP members can help out and gain experience working on a video project. Productions with additional support from other organization or funding sources will be encouraged to apply.

Successful applicants will receive:
$1 000.00- Honorarium
$500.00 – Project expenses
$1 000.00 - WAMP Production Credit towards equipment rentals for the project.

Oh Snap!: Learning To Train-Surf in Bangladesh

People generally ride the roofs of trains in Bangladesh for one of three reasons: 1) It's free. 2) It's fun. 3) There is no room inside.

Unfortunately, regardless of the reason, the reality is the same: Sitting or lying on the corroded metal roof of a train moving at 40 kilometers per hour is dangerous.

"When the train starts your feet will shake and you will try to hold something, but there is nothing to hold on to," says Bangladeshi photographer G.M.B. Akash, who learned to balance while shooting the photos above. (The project came to my attention through Anastasia Photo in New York City, which is currently featuring a larger exhibit of Akash's work titled "Survivors.") "Knowing that at any time an accident can happen will make you nervous [and] give you insecurity, making it more risky," he added.

Those who ride the roof every day to work, too broke to pay for a spot inside, eventually get accustomed to the shaking. They learn how to gracefully duck low-hanging tree limbs and nonchalantly avoid decapitation by stray wire. These regulars often grow so comfortable that they doze as they ride. But all it takes is a sudden stop or a crazy dream, and then even these veterans run the risk of rolling right off.

PURPOSE

The Executive Director is given the delegated authority by the Board of Directors to provide leadership and management in support of the vision, mandate and objectives of Frozen Eyes Photographic Society.

ACCOUNTABILITY

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors, by providing overall direction and co-ordination necessary for the effective and efficient delivery of all programs and services of Frozen Eyes Photographic Society. This will include but is not limited to administering the "Youth Take Charge" project, funded by the Department of Heritage Canada, and other current programs and services, as well as any other sources of funding we may access in future.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1.
Program and Service Delivery

Lead the day to day operations of the Society. Plan, formulate and manage "Youth Take Charge" and other ongoing projects. Coordinate board members, contractors, staff and volunteers to meet project deadlines. Continually work to foster a strong youth membership and maintain good standing relationships with schools and organizations throughout the Northwest Territories (NWT). Develop the necessary policies for such programs and services, in order to further the objectives of the Society by working closely with the Board.
Ensure that the Society is in good standing with Legal Registries and government departments; this would include ensuring that obligations with government taxation authorities are kept up-to-date. Identify resources needed to achieve the goals of the Society through project timelines and work-plans in conjunction with the Board. Attend all Board meetings. Encourage team building by facilitating open communication and a positive working relationship with the Board, contractors and volunteers. Identify and obtain needed supplies and equipment for FEPS.

2 Fundraising and Financial Responsibilities

Seek and obtain funding from government at all levels and other bodies including, but not limited to, foundations, community organizations, corporations and business groups for use in the Society's programs and services. This includes seeking new funding sources annually, to maintain and expand programming.
Ensure that the Society's programs and services generate revenue for FEPS whenever appropriate. Monitor existing sources of funding (ensuring that all reporting requirements are met) such as grants, contributions, and in-kind donations and work with key organizations to maintain annual funding.
Identify and research on-going and alternative funding opportunities for the Society and generate proposals for contributions and grant funding. Administer the funds of the Society according to the budget approved by the Board.
Work in conjunction with the President and the Treasurer with regard to all financial issues. Ensure financial documents are maintained on an on-going basis.
Maintain accurate book-keeping procedures as outlined by Society policies and procedures.
Complete all necessary reports as required by the Society.

3 Public Relations

Act as an advocate for the Society and promote community awareness for its programs and services throughout the NWT. Participate in networking and community relations activities on behalf of the Society.
In conjunction with the Board, serve as media liaison for the Society and promote its programs and services. Maintain constant communication with partner organizations and related groups.
Maintain good standing relationships with sponsors, funders, and other community organizations. Provide an annual Executive Director Report at the Annual General Meeting.

Term

The Executive Director is hired by the Human Resources Committee through an as-needed competition. The Executive Director is a part-time position which will be occupied by the selected candidate until the end of their contract term, or they resign from the position, or are terminated by the Board of Directors.

Renewal

This job description is to be reviewed every six months by the Human Resources Committee with any and all changes brought forward for discussion and vote by the Board of Directors.

Most magazine assignments don't have big budgets on the front end, but if you play your cards right, you can help make up for it on the back end. One way to do that is to be savvy about article reprint licensing.

After a CEO or hedge fund manager lands on the cover of a publication or in a feature spread, they will usually hear from the reprint department of the magazine offering to license them reprints of the article. Reprints are a repackaged version of an article without the heft or distraction of the rest of the magazine, and they're typically used by the subject of an article to promote their company. Eprints are like reprints, but rather than being printed, they're packaged as a PDF that can be sent out by email (to a specified number of recipients) or posted online (for a specified period). Reprints and eprints can be valuable promotional tools because they carry what amounts to an endorsement from a trusted publication or news source.

When a photograph is used in the original publication, it's considered editorial use. But repackaging and distribution by a third party constitutes advertising use which is often worth a lot more than the original job. The first thing photographers have to do to insure that they get their fare share of this value is make sure they reserve those rights. When a client sends you a contract, look at the fee and look at the rights you're conveying in exchange for that fee. Do they match up? Decide what's a fair price for one-time editorial use (per day and per page). Then add on additional fees for each additional use.

Some publishing companies are big enough to have their own in-house reprint departments. But most magazines will farm that work out to reprint companies like Foster, Pars, Reprint Outsource, Scoop, Wright's or YGS. The sheer size and number of these companies should give you an indication of the value of reprints.

Some clients will want to secure reprint rights upfront, bundling it with the shoot fee. Others will want an option to purchase reprint rights (at predetermined prices) as the need arises. Still others prefer to negotiate reprint rights on a case-by-case basis. All of those are reasonable positions to take provided the compensation is fair. Here's one magazine's reprint terms....

The first year of the program will focus on the development of storytelling through script, while the second year of the fellowship will focus on the production planning and strategizing to help the grantees successfully create solid marketing and financing plans by the end of their two-year fellowship. It is the aim and ambition of both the ISF and the Indigenous Film Circle to strengthen the indigenous film network while also helping each other support and develop strong new talent within the film industry. We hope that this global program collaboration can build a permanent network for indigenous filmmakers and supporting partners world-wide.

The Indigenous Film Fellowship seeks creative, dedicated and talented filmmakers to submit their stories to be developed with the guidance and mentorship of established filmmakers with proven success records who will provide encouragement and refine the awarded fellows talents, scripts and production plans. Our aim is to have the fellows' film projects industry ready by the end of year two of the fellowship for potential financing.

REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must be of indigenous background.
Stories submitted must convey an indigenous perspective.
Fellowship seeks stories where the screenplay is not fully developed nor currently funded.
Treatments must be for feature narrative films.
Fellows must be willing to commit two years to the fellowship and complete the work as required by the deadlines.
Applicants acknowledge that if they are accepted, they have one week to confirm their commitment to the fellowship and understand that if they do not meet their deadlines as stated in the fellowship or convey a lack of willingness to participate, can be subject to dismissal.
Applicants must be willing to travel to annual IFF gatherings and workshops.
Applicants must be willing and desire mentorship guidance and critique.
Must complete all portions of the application. Any materials not provided may disqualify an application.
Applications must be completed in either English, Spanish or Russian. If an applicant cannot complete the application in either of these two languages, please write the International Sámi Film Centre (ISF) with a rationale and request at least 30 days before submission deadline. ISF will try their best to accommodate the request(s).

CRITERIA:

Preferences are made on stories told in an indigenous language, but not required.
Stories must demonstrate an indigenous perspective and applications must address the relevance of their story to their community.

So you've got this incredible image that you've got to show the world. Not only are you going to share it with your friends online, but you're also going to enter it in a contest or two to win some fabulous prizes. Well before you do I recommend reading the fine print, that includes the the Terms of Use (ToU) for web sites and Contest Rules for, you guessed it, photo contests.

One of the most underhanded tactics sweeping the online and publishing world is the hijacking of photo rights through inequitable terms buried in the fine print of legalese for contests and web sites. The perpetrators will no doubt surprise you, they include the likes of Facebook, National Geographic + PDN, Popular Photo, and more.

This issue is not a new one and has reared its ugly head in the past on other photo sharing sites, but now this tactic is becoming increasingly common with major players. Offending words such as perpetual, royalty-free license and irrevocable are being introduced to hijack the rights to photographs of well intended photographers looking to play the odds to have their work recognized in a contest or just to simply share with friends.

So what does this mean? It means companies, that used to pay for quality photography to fill the pages of their publications, are now taking advantage of well intentioned photographers to develop royalty-free photo libraries they now can tap to fill the pages of their publication or place in promotional advertisements.

I almost forgot about this underhanded tactic until I started to play with the idea of submitting to the Popular Photography contest "Are You the Next Great Photographer?" sponsored by Apple. In talking with a friend and fellow photographer Richard Wong it was noted the terms outlined in Popular Photography's Terms of Use were not photographer friendly.

The sign doesn't necessarily have to be a road sign; it can be a sign you have seen in a hotel, restaurant, shop, or somewhere completely out of the blue.

The best photos will be entered in a drawing to win a four-night luxury stay for two at the Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

A maximum of three photograph entries per person is permitted.

Signs don't have to be in English, as long as you translate it into English correctly. Photo descriptions must be in English.

Now a novel approach to photographic imaging is making its way into cameras and smartphones. Computational photography, a subdiscipline of computer graphics, conjures up images rather than simply capturing them. More computer animation than pinhole camera, in other words, though using real light refracted through a lens rather than the virtual sort. The basic premise is to use multiple exposures, and even multiple lenses, to capture information from which photographs may be derived. These data contain a raft of potential pictures which software then converts into what, at first blush, looks like a conventional photo.

The best known example of computational photography is high-dynamic-range (HDR) imaging, which combines multiple photos shot in rapid succession, and at different exposures, into one picture of superior quality.

But HDR is just one way to splice together different images of the same subject, says Marc Levoy of Stanford University, who kickstarted the field in a seminal paper http://graphics.stanford.edu/papers/light/ he and colleague Pat Hanrahan published in 1996. Since then, aspects of computational photography have moved from academia into commercial products. This, Dr Levoy explains, is mainly down to processing capacity of devices, such as camera-equipped smartphones, growing faster than the quantity of sensors which record light data. "You are getting more computing power per pixel."

To show off the potential of some new techniques, Dr Levoy programmed the SynthCam app http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/synthcam/id412992079?mt=8 for the iPhone and iOS devices, which takes a number of successive video frames and processes them into a single, static image that improves on the original in a variety of ways. He and his colleagues have also built several models of Frankencamera http://graphics.stanford.edu/papers/camera20/ : prototypes made using bits of kit found in commercially available devices which use a host of tricks to capture data and turn them into better pictures with clever algorithms. SynthCam and Frankencameras can improve photos taken in low-light conditions, which are usually quite grainy, and create an artificial focus that is absent from the original set of images.

Still, for all the superior results and techniques that computational photography may reveal, Dr Levoy laments, camera-makers have been loth to embrace the new approach. This is poised to change. On June 22nd Ren Ng, a former student of his at Stanford, launched a new company called Lytro http://www.lytro.com/picture_gallery , promising to launch an affordable snapshot camera this autumn.

Rather than use conventional technology, as the Frankencamera does, to take multiple successive exposures and then meld them, Dr Ng has figured out a way to capture lots of images simultaneously. In 2007, the Boston Public Library rediscovered a rather intriguing cache of photographs from the late 19th century in their archives. While there is still some debate about the provenance of these photos, they believe that the prints were taken by photographers affiliated with the Boston Camera Club, and that this organization was responsible for coordinating this specific project. Recently, the Library decided to digitize 113 of these images, and they are available here. Visitors can search the collection by keyword, and they will also find that the Flickr format will all allow them to send images to friends and also zoom in for a closer look. There are some great items here, including a print of Benjamin Franklin's house on Milk Street and a photograph of the Old State House from 1898. [KMG]

In 1925, the Louisville Post and the Louisville Herald merged under the
direction of James Buckner Brown. Under Brown's leadership this new
publication became an influential force in local politics, and it made quite
a run of it until folding for good in 1936. The paper's photo "morgue" was
acquired by the University of Louisville Photographic Archives in 1994.
Today, visitors can view over 3,800 digitized photographs from this
collection, and they can get started by looking through the collection
headings, which include "Military", "Cities & Towns", and "Ohio River".
First-time users may want to start by looking through the "Historic Sites"
area, as it includes some fine images of the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace
National Historic Site in Hodgenville and several aerial views of Churchill
Downs. Visitors can also use the search engine to look for specific
materials, and overall, it's a great resource for persons with a passion for
Kentucky history and United States history in general. [KMG]

"Click About It" is a series of international photography competitions organized by the European Journalism Centre. http://ejc.net/ The third edition, co-organized with Oxfam and sponsored by the European Commission, offers the first-place winner a trip to an Oxfam project.

The competition focuses on the topic of "aid." In this competition, photographers are asked to capture moments that show how people's lives and communities are being transformed. Whether in Berlin or Bogota, tackling poverty, health, education, gender, environment and agricultural issues -- photographers should use creativity to illustrate the concept.

Each contestant can upload a maximum of eight entries to the competition platform but they must be added at the same time.

First place wins a trip to an Oxfam project and the three runner-ups each win a EU€500 (about $700) Amazon gift certificate. A selection of photographs will be published in various Oxfam publications.

Cinema Politica is a non-competitive continuous documentary screening series with locations throughout Canada and abroad. A non-profit media arts organization committed to connecting audiences on campuses and communities to independent political and social issue non-fiction cinema. The majority of screenings occur during the academic year with two annual submission deadlines: August 1, 2011 (for the Fall 2011 Program) and December 1, 2011 (for the Winter 2012 Program).

"...The weekend got the better of me! Like I mentioned, I've only had the Steadicam for a few months, so I'm still pretty new. All of my work up till now has been as an event videographer. I generally shoot and then hand the footage to the client. If I had more free time, I'd probably get into editing, but right now I just shoot. My camera package includes a Sony EX-1r, Sennheiser wireless mic package, Sachtler sticks, and a Steadicam Zephyr. I very seldom need a light package, so I rent those as needed. ..."

"...I've been doing videography since I was in my early teens. As you can imagine, there's not a lot of this type of work down here. Just enough to pay for new toys. J I did attend the 2yr film program at Sait in the early '90's. Somewhere along the road I ended back in Hay River. Or as I like to say, "Life happens". I'm very easy to get along with and bring a professional attitude to any project.

If you ever have any projects where you need an extra videographer, don't hesitate to give me a call. The summer months can be difficult with the staff taking holidays, but I try to fit things in.

Alexander Legaree launched Coal Photography on June 19, with the goal of showing ordinary things in new ways.

"What motivates me is my innate desire to explore the ordinary and make it extraordinary," said Legaree through e-mail. "I want to look at things through a new lens and show someone something they have seen a million times before, yet have never seen."

This vision also applies to the name of his company.

"The name has a bit of a story … Carbon is one of the most common elements in the universe and is present in all known life and can take several forms – the most notable? A diamond," Legaree wrote. "Atoms so tightly packed together under intense heat and pressure that they form the hardest material known and something truly breathtaking to behold ... and another form of carbon is coal."

As part of the launch, Legaree is donating $2.50 to the NWT SPCA for every "like" Coal Photography received between June 19 to June 28 on its Facebook page.

CUSO-VSO is a non-profit development agency that works through volunteers. Each year, we send hundreds of global citizens to work on collaborative development projects in more than 40 countries in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Latin America, and the Caribbean. ABOUT THE PLACEMENT
The aim of this placement is to collect quality communications materials (photos, video, audio clips etc.) in order to share learning and best practice generated by partners and volunteers within the VSO Program. The outcome will be that CUSO-VSO will be better able to demonstrate the impact of international volunteering and of working in partnership to tackle poverty.
You will be paired up with a volunteer journalist and will work collaboratively with the Country Office team to interview and write stories about volunteers, partners, beneficiaries and staff.
WHAT DOES THE ROLE INVOLVE?
The volunteer will work:
•    Work closely with VSO country program staff to establish project logistics and schedule •    Take photos, video and/or audio which capture the impact of international volunteering
and of working in partnership to tackle poverty. Subjects will include north-south volunteers, south-south volunteers, national volunteers, Diaspora volunteers, corporate volunteers, partners and beneficiaries
•    Ensure that information is delivered in appropriate formats (as specified) upon completion of the placement.

McGuinty Government Helping Better Understanding For Aboriginal Youth

More than 50 Aboriginal youth are showcasing their images and stories in an online gallery.

With support from the province and Planet IndigenUs, professional Aboriginal photographers visited seven communities to mentor youth in Grades 6 to 8, teaching them about photography and how to use it to tell a story. Those images are part of a gallery "In My Own Eyes" and are now available to view online.

The gallery of photos is launched on National Aboriginal Day, a day that recognizes the important contributions that Aboriginal people, their cultures and traditions have made, and continue to make, to Ontario and Canada.

QUICK FACTS

The communities that participated in this project include: M'Chigeeng First Nation, Ojibways of Onigaming, Moose Cree First Nation, Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation. Urban Aboriginal youth in the cities of Fort Frances, Toronto and North Bay also participated.
Mentors were assisted on-reserve by a member of the Chiefs of Ontario's Young Peoples Council, and in urban settings by a member of the Ontario Federation of Indian Friendship Centres Youth Council.
43 percent of Aboriginal people - First Nation, Inuit and Métis - in Ontario are less than 25 years old.
Planet IndigenUs is a major international cultural initiative of Toronto's Harbourfront Centre in partnership with the Woodland Cultural Centre in Brantford.

The Ian Parry Scholarship is designed to award young documentary photographers with a bursary that will enable them to undertake a chosen project and raise their profile in the international photographic community.

Ian Parry was a photojournalist who died whilst on assignment for the Sunday Times during the Romanian revolution in 1989. He was just 24 years old. The Scholarship was set up by Aidan Sullivan and Ian's friends and family in order to build something positive from such a tragic death.

I am writing from the Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS) in London. The RCS is an international education charity which supports and promotes the culture and core values of the modern Commonwealth.

We are keen to collaborate with your Film Commission, in promoting two exciting and innovative competitions – the Commonwealth Photographic and Vision Awards (film). Open to Commonwealth citizens under the age of 30, these competitions will act as a platform for aspiring and established photographers and filmmakers to realise their dreams, whilst promoting the rich culture, heritage and scenery/landscape of Canada's provinces and territories. What's more, selected winners of the different categories would be in line to win some amazing monetary and photography/film equipment. In 2010, winners were flown to London for a week of workshops and a Gala Awards Dinner. Some time ago I began registering all my photographs with the US Copyright Office. Like all photographers I've witnessed a massive increase of theft of my work in recent years. And like others I've found it difficult, if not impossible, to get reasonable compensation for these infringements, especially if the infringer is in a foreign country.

But one country, the US, provides very hefty penalties for copyright theft – so long as the work has been registered prior to the infringement in question. So what would happen if I, a foreigner, registered my work and subsequently found it used without permission in the US? Would US copyright law really provide me with the same protection that it does the country's own citizens? Last week I got my answer.

In January this year I found one of my photos on a website owned by a major US media company. In February I engaged attorney Barbara Hoffman of the Hoffman Law Firm to handle the matter. Last week the infringer paid a substantial settlement. As is normal in such settlements no party admitted liability. But media organisations don't usually write five figure cheques without good reason: draw your own conclusions.

However only a tiny percentage of US photographers bother to register their images; virtually no foreign photographers do so. Two reasons are usually given: that the registration process is too complex, and that the cost is too high. Neither of these is true. Since the US Copyright Office began accepting online registrations the process has become both simpler and cheaper. While the system appears intimidating at first, that's simply because it allows for the registration of so many different kinds of creative works. Concentrate only what applies to photographers, and the process becomes much clearer; and the registration process has pop-up guide notes at each stage. For the truly challenged, both Photoshelter and the Photo Attorney have detailed guides with blow-by-blow screenshots of actual registrations. How hard can it be?

As for cost, online registration is $35 a time, you can register an unlimited number of images in a batch for that fee, and you have 90 days from the moment of exposure to register new work. So simply register your photographs in batches 5 times a year. Cost per annum for complete US copyright protection, $175. That doesn't sound expensive to me: how much did you say you spent on that new lens?

Uranium film festival of Brazil

"Uranium 238: La bomba sucia del Pentágono"selected as one of the eight best films of the Uranium Film Festival of Rio de Janeiro 2011.

One of my films, Uranium (NFB 1990) was selected to participate in the first international Uranium Film Festival in Brazil, which just ended. As Brazil is not known for its uranium or nuclear industry, I found this intriguing. I put some questions to Marcia Gomez de Oliveira, the Director of the Festival, and the director of programming Norbert G. Suchanek.

1. Why a festival of films on uranium?

Marcia Gomes de Oliveira: Because nuclear power plants cannot exist without uranium mining. And that factor is still not known to the general population or society. Also totally unknown to the public here in Brazil and in Latin America are the environmental and social consequences and the negative health effects of uranium mining and other installations of the complex nuclear energy industry. Our film festival wants to change that, wants to "popularize" this important information.

Most of the documentaries and movies about uranium, mining, nuclear energy or the Chernobyl disaster have never been shown in Brazil and were never translated into our language, Portuguese. There is a huge language barrier between the English and Portuguese-speaking world. Our festival is the first step in breaking down that wall. In addition, of course we want to stimulate filmmakers, especially filmmakers from Latin America and from Portuguese-speaking African countries, to produce documentaries and movies on nuclear and radioactive subjects.

And why in Brazil?

Marcia: Because we have nuclear power plants and uranium mines. And, starting with ex-president Lula da Silva, the Brazilian government wants not only to triple the production of Yellow Cake but also in the near future export enriched uranium. That is not all. The government is now constructing a third nuclear power plant, Angra 3, and wants to build up to 40 or 50 new nuclear power plants all over Brazil. Our government wants to transform our country into a globally important nuclear power. The Brazilian people until today have not been aware of this huge nuclear program. And we have to discus it, before it becomes reality, before it is too late.

Why on uranium and not for example hydroelectric dams?

The nuclear or uranium question is as important as the question of hydroelectric dams. The difference is that in Brazil, since the 1980s people already know about the negative effects of the big dams and hydroelectric power plants like Itaipu, Tucurui or Balbina. They are visible. However, the effects of radioactivity, the effects of uranium mining are not yet visible in our society. For that, we are working to spread independent information in form of documentaries about the whole nuclear energy complex and the radioactive risks.

2. For Norbert: You have seen pretty much everything that's been done on uranium mining and its consequences over the last 30 years (40, right ?)

Norbert: As journalist and activist born in formerly West Germany, I followed the nuclear question for more than 30 years now. In Europe, "uranium mining" was always a forgotten subject because most of the uranium mining happens in other continents. The huge uranium mine of East Germany was also "forgotten" because it was simply a secret behind the Iron Curtain. The huge problems in the uranium mines of Portugal were not questioned outside of Portugal because of the language barrier and because that small country in the edge of Europe was not part of the early European Community. Therefore, for decades uranium mining was not visible to the European public and to most of the people worldwide.

Looking at all of them, what role has documentary played with respect to this issue?

Documentaries have been one of the most important vehicles to bring the uranium case into the public. Like I said, mining was not visible for the people, because it happened in secrecy or in other countries. Until today, the question of Nuclear Energy has been mainly fixed on the question of "Nuclear Waste" from nuclear power plants and nuclear accidents.

Starting with documentaries about uranium mining in Australia, documentaries about the fight of indigenous peoples against mines, people in the industrialized nations are becoming slowly aware that the fuel of Nuclear Power plants do not come from heaven. But will require many more documentaries to inform all of our societies, so that the people and their politicians can make correct and wise decisions in future.

Can you mention a couple of films which stand out ?

First of all your documentary Uranium and this is not because I want to be polite. Your documentary is simply a good piece of work with impressive images and one of the first that explores the consequences of uranium mining in Canada in a profound way.

From the other films that we selected for our festival, I personally like very much the documentary Fight for Country (the story of the Jabiluka Blockade) from Pip Starr, a film director who sadly died far too young. In the year 1998, Pip Starr spent over a year working with the aboriginal Mirrar people opposing a second uranium mine on their land. Finally, thousands of people from all over Australia traveled to the Kakadu National Park to join the Mirrar in their struggle. Produced in 2001, Fight for Country shows that people who stand up against uranium mining are not alone!

The third documentary I want to mention is a new production by film director Klara Sager from Sweden. The location of "Under the surface – Om bergen faller sönder " produced in 2010/11 is the Hotagen, a mountain area in the North of Sweden.

Young, well-educated geo-engineers and technicians are hiking through a beautiful landscape in search for uranium, without any feeling, about what will happen to that amazing place of earth if one day uranium mining starts. On the other side, you have normal local people, elderly, who do not want uranium mining nor uranium prospecting happen in their land.

It is interesting to see, that Swedish people who are against uranium mining are not young students or "hippy"-type activists, but normal, elderly people. Under the surface also brings to light another kind of modern generation conflict – technicians and engineers fresh from the university working for international mining companies against elderly local people, grocery shopkeepers, housewives and the indigenous Sami, reindeer herders, with a totally different concept of nature and living.

In an attempt to break new ground and always push the boundaries, Halta Definizione has created the world's highest ever resolution in a picture. Or actually, the image consists of 1,677 different shots and is then stitched together to make a truly amazing, if not wondrous picture where depth gets a new meaning.

So what is this picture portraying? Well, it wouldn't be right if it wasn't Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper". The depth of the image is just mind boggling. You can zoom down to the smallest grain of paint and still not lose the clarity or the crispness of the image itself. It's really amazing to zoom and pan around in search of those infamous details that we all know of since the movie "The Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown.

The original 15 by 30 foot painting was photographed over a period of 9 hours and later meticulously stitched together where the tapestry of images finally became a fully viewable and zoom-able image. This image has never before been seen in it's full scale on the Internet.

Of 11 partners and resident artists at the private gallery in Rochester - the western New York city where George Eastman transformed photography from an arcane hobby into a mass commodity with his $1 Brownie in 1900 - the Thompsons are the only ones left who haven't switched to filmless digital cameras.

But that time may be near.

"I like the color we get in film, the natural light," says Phyllis Thompson, 70, who married her high-school sweetheart 50 years ago. "But digital cameras are getting much better all the time, and there will come a time when we probably won't be able to get film anymore. And then we'll have to change."

ElecomSoft, a privately owned company in the heart of Russia (Moscow) has fiddled around with Nikon's Image authentication software and managed to let a forged photo pass for a genuine one. Nikon originally created their authentication system to inhibit an uneditted image to be manipulated and being sold for original/raw.

Forged photos are nowadays so common for false political statements, legal evidence & business affairs that can define or totally destroy an individual or company's name and/or carreer. So Nikon thought it invented the perfect software to validate if a photo was taken with their camera and if it was modified in any way.

Captured memories with Helping Hearts photographers

"Helping Hearts is an organization that is Canada wide providing free photography sessions for families with children who are disabled, sick or ill," says representative Brandy Jackson. "The family gets a free session with a disk of 20 to 30 images, and free 8" x 10" print of their choice."

The founders Melissa Knowles and Michelle Regner created the Helping Hearts project by asking Canadian photographers in various provinces to donate their time and skills in providing free photography sessions for families with children under 16 years of age suffering from a life threatening illness or disability.

"I wanted to start a similar program myself. Then I found a link on Facebook of a photographer that I follow out of Yellowknife, who became a member. So I contacted them (Helping Hearts) and they accepted me," says Jackson.

To become part of their photography team, a form found on the Helping Hearts' website at http://www.helping-hearts.ca must be completed along with a photography portfolio or an online website so photographs can be reviewed.

If approved, the individual is invited to become part of the Helping Hearts photography team.

What are the IPTC standards?

Way back in the dark ages (OK, it was the 1970's) of image transmission, AP and other wire services actually sent images via machines that were little more than fancy fax machines. A black and white image was printed out line by line similar to how an inkjet printer of today works. Alongside the image would be typewritten information regarding caption, location source, crediting, etc. Typically the caption would either be cut off, or photocopied, and the two would go their separate ways. The text would be sent to editors, while the "photo" would go elsewhere for reproduction. If one or the other got lost or misplaced it would take valuable time to track it down and possibly mean missing a deadline. Obviously there had to be a better way.

Jump forward to today, where each image file can be saved using Adobe Photoshop with this text information embedded within the file. Anyone that's worked around newspapers, with digital images or image databases for a while has probably heard the acronyms IPTC or IPTC-NAA tossed around, usually when discussing the use of the File Info feature of photoshop. But few understand what they mean or what they stand for. The short story is that IPTC, the International Press Telecommunications Council, was one of the groups responsible for encouraging the standards necessary to"marry" the text information describing an image with the image data itself. The NAA is the Newspaper Association of America (formerly ANPA), and they also have been responsible for developing standards for exchanging information between news operations, including information used to describe images.

At this point, some of you are thinking,"OK that's enough about history, I'm doomed to repeat it, just show me how to use these IPTC "thingies" to help me find my images." If that's the case, you may wish to jump to the chart of Sample IPTC fields below. If you need some help in figuring out how each of these IPTC fields actually appears in your version of Photoshop, download the IPTC Core mapped fields PDF. For those that want a little bit more background about how these standards came to be, read on.

A Brief History of the IPTC
Standards regarding metadata for news images have evolved over time, beginning in the 1970's when some were first issued as"guidelines." However, most of these efforts were regional in nature, and focused on text. As news organizations moved from manual typewriters to CRTs (Cathode Ray Tubes) and VDTs (Video Display Terminals) these standards were revised and became more specific. Only later, as the world embraced the web, did the standards begin to address multimedia content.

In 1979, the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) approved its first news exchange standard IPTC 7901. This provided metadata and content in plain text only; the only delimiters allowed were spaces and line breaks. Despite these limitations, IPTC 7901/ANPA 1312 is still in use. In the '80s, the IPTC and ANPA standards were revised, updated and expanded into other areas such as radio and broadcast television. As the '90s approached, these various groups focused their efforts on a new standard that could serve various media, not just text....

These are a few of the things I think about while shooting with a Phantom High Speed Digital Cinema camera. The above video is a bunch of test footage I shot to get familiar with the new "Flex" version. I shot inside my Las Vegas Palms Casino hotel room between the hours of 2am and 6am. We proudly support photographers and communications professionals who use imagery to promote positive change in our world. To that end, we've launched our Grants for Good.

Nonprofits need imagery to tell their stories effectively, which is why our Grants for Good provide two grants of $15,000 annually, to cover photographer, filmmaker and agency costs as they create compelling new imagery for the nonprofit of their choice.

Grants recipients may use the entire award to offset shoot expenses, or choose to donate all or part of it directly to their charity and contribute their own time and resources. The photographer and the nonprofit as well as the communications agency involved will be showcased to the media and to our customers..

In a telephone interview Friday, he said he was already in Florida swimming with and photographing manatees at Crystal Springs. "Some of the other divers here are complaining about how cold it is, they should try diving in the Arctic," he joked.

He says this National Geographic Live! series is a first for Florida. "Most people will never see a polar bear in the wild so here's a chance to look at these magnificent animals," he says.

Some of Nicklen's other encounters include an amazing face-off with a female leopard seal, a powerful animal that could have easily killed him. But instead, she started offering him food, bringing him penguins that she had killed, This encounter and others can be seen on YouTube.

Nicklen, who is one of about 50 freelance photographers that work for National Geographic, says he is "not a tree-hugging environmentalist" but he does believe that the planet is warming up and the wildlife in Arctic is in danger.

"I want people to go away with a sense of appreciation for the wildlife that may disappear some day if the ice continues to melt," he says.

Nicklen, who lives in Whitehorse, Yukon, with his wife, has tracked Stellar sea lions in the Aleutian Islands and dived with minke whales off Australia's coral reefs.

You're sitting in your easy chair and surfing the web. You're not paying much attention, until you see it. It's your photo, but you did not post it there. You can't believe they used your photo without your permission. Now what do you do? The steps you take may limit your ultimate remedies so be sure to first understand what your options are.

Make Copies of the Infringement
If you think that the use is likely an infringement, make copies of it - both in electronic and print forms. Once the infringer realizes that she is caught, she will do what she can to get rid of the evidence of the infringement. You may need that evidence later.

If the infringement is in print, then take a photograph of it, scan it, photocopy it, and/or show it to another person who would be willing to testify about it. If the infringement is on the Internet and/or in electronic form, make a paper print of it and/or copy a screen capture of it; both are better! (Snagit by TechSmith is a great program to copy web pages.) Determine whether your copyright management information (CMI) is included in or has been removed from the infringing use. Read more about why and how to include your CMI in your photos in one of my blog entries here and here.

Make Sure That the Use Is an Infringement
Not all uses of your photographs are infringements. Do you use a licensing agency that may have authorized the use? Could the user be related to an entity to which you authorized the use? Is the use a fair use? While only a court can ultimately decide what fair use is, the law gives us guidelines as to what may qualify. Read more about fair use in my blog entry here.

Research the Infringer
Next, find out what you can about the infringer. Research the infringer's website to find his name and contact information. If the infringer is a corporation based in the United States, you can find information about it on the website of the Secretary of State for the state where the infringer is based. To find the Secretary of State's website using an Internet search engine such as Google, search the corporation's state's name (such as "Georgia") and the words "secretary of state." The extension of the URL will be ".gov" or ".us." Be careful - some sites attempt to appear to be the state's website so that they can charge you for the information. Once on the proper Secretary of State's website, look for "corporations search," "business search" or similar language. You then will find the company's registered or resident agent, officers, and/or official address.

You also may be able to find a contact name by searching the website's "who is" information. You first do a "whois" search on the website name. Several websites provide free "whois" services, such as http://www.whois.net/. Conduct an Internet search to find them. After you enter the website name there, you may be able to find contact information for the administrator of the website.

Robin and the Staff at Roy's are working hard to support local and northern Photographers (from Beginners to Pros) and are constantly improving their products and services. The Christmas 2010 issue of Outdoor Photographer magazine named Nicklen one of the world's 40 most influential nature photographers; he is featured in the cover story in the January 2011 issue of Photo Life magazine; and earlier this month, Up Here named him Northerner of the Year.

Earlier this year, Nicklen won first prize for nature photography in the World Press Awards, and he had two images selected for inclusion in the International League of Conservation Photographers' 40 Best Nature Photographs of All Time auction.

Nicklen grew up on Baffin Island in Nunavut, studied marine biology at the University of Victoria for four years and then worked as a wildlife biologist in the Northwest Territories for four years.

He now lives just outside of Whitehorse, but he travels the world, taking photos and writing for National Geographic.

He's passionate about the wildlife he photographs and feels his images are a way of helping to preserve what he loves.

"Recently, we influenced Parliament to vote against oil tankers in the Great Bear Rainforest on the B.C. coast because a team of photojournalists … went in there this summer," he said. "We've been working on a lot of different campaigns."

The photography show is called "The Last Kodachrome" but the last Kodachrome images aren't in the show. They are still in Pat Willard's Nikon camera.

They will have to come out by next week because the last lab in the world that processes the famed color film, Dwayne's Photo in Parsons, Kan., is discontinuing it at the end of the year. The last rolls to be processed must be there by noon, Dec. 30. After 75 years, all that will be left of Kodachrome is the Paul Simon song, and a state park named after it in Utah.

There will still be a sister film called Ektachrome, but Willard, a fine art photographer in Redwood City, is not buying it.

"I'll probably do only black and white," he says, lowering his tone to a funereal whisper. "There's no color like Kodachrome."

When the Eastman Kodak Co announced that the last rolls were hitting the shelves, in June 2009, Willard bought 40 rolls, at $8 apiece, and stuck them in the fridge of his townhouse in Redwood Shores. Then he contacted Ann Jastrab, director of Rayko Gallery, proposing a juried exhibition for Kodachrome prints.

Fifty photographers nationwide, plus a few from Canada, northern Europe and South Africa, sent in portfolios. Twenty-one photographers were selected and 45 prints are in the show, which opened Dec. 17 and, after a Christmas break, will reopen Jan. 4. Included are four prints of Willard's abstract expressionist work.

The mayor may have been motivated by frugality when he criticized a $13,000 bill the photographer submitted to the city, but it sure came out wrong.

An "aghast" Watson told reporters: "These kinds of expenses are the kinds that get my blood boiling and we'll just have to do a better job."

Media being what it is, before long the yammering hordes were yelling "ripoff" and "Walmart, anyone?," the story turning into an attack on Couvrette's professional abilities.

Well, if you know anything about Couvrette, 59, who has photographed more of "official Ottawa" than anybody in 35 years, he's not one to suffer in silence.

In the waiting room of his studio on Gladstone Avenue, Couvrette is firing back. "We had people, literally, saying I was a crook."

First of all, Couvrette has photographed every city council reaching back to Marion Dewar. So, there is some history, not to mention, presumably, satisfaction with his work. And the city signed a contract, which spells out how and how much, before this council was elected. (He also notes his rates to the city haven't gone up in 10 years.)

Secondly, he says he offered the city a price of $2,725 if the councillors and mayor came to his studio on a given day. No go with this busy bunch.

As news organisations make cutbacks, photojournalists, many of whom are freelancers, have been struggling to find enough commissions. Co-founded by Tina Ahrens, a photo editor and consultant, Karim Ben Khelifa, a photojournalist and Fanuel Dewever, a business consultant, http://www.emphas.is/ is seeking a new funding model for photojournalism, an often costly and time-consuming trade.

Ben Khelifa explained to the Editors Weblog that his inspiration for the initiative came when he was pitching an ambitious project that he wanted to carry out, but despite the fact that everybody he spoke to showed great interest in the project, he couldn't find funding. He had the realization that there was a serious demand for photojournalism, and that if media organisations weren't prepared to fund it, maybe the public would be. The public, rather than editors, would take on the role of information gatekeepers.

Crowd-funding for news has already been experimented with, the best-known example being Spot.Us, a start up based in California's Bay Area, founded by David Cohn with help from the Knight Foundation. Ben Khelifa only discovered Spot.Us after he started researching for his project, however.

Photojournalists will make their pitches to Emphas.is, often in the form of a video, and a reviewing committee will decide whether or not to accept these, based on their viability. A cost will be set - Khelifa said he anticipates $5000 as an average- and the pitches will be put on the Emphas.is site. The public can then view these, and if they choose to contribute a minimum of $10, they will be invited into a private community where they can communicate with the journalist.

-adjective, Acronym for "PHOtoshopped Beyond All Recognition." A play on the the more popular acronym FUBAR: "Fucked Up Beyond All Recognition," PHOBAR refers to an image, usually a photo of a person, that has been retouched and airbrushed with digital image manipulation software on a computer so significantly, that the person in the photo is barely recognizable.

Of course she looks perfect in that photo, she was PHOBAR.

A big part of the joy of photography is sharing your images with others. The Internet has made it easy to instantly show your shots to friends, family, and even people you don't know. Many photographers post their work to Facebook, Flickr, Picasa, photography forums, or their own blogs and websites.

But along with the reward of sharing your shots with a wider audience comes the risk that the host for the website you display images on may be able to use your photos in ways you don't intend. Fortunately, you can take steps to protect your photos when posting them on the Internet.

Understand a site's Terms of Service

Read through the TOS to determine if simply posting your content (a broad term that includes your photos) allows the site to take your copyright, or gives it a broad license to use your work for marketing or advertisements.

Be smart about photo contests

Another time photographers should exercise caution is when they enter a contest. Photo contests can be a great way to get recognition for your work (and even win some prizes in the process). Unfortunately, many companies use photos contests to collect images cheaply for marketing and advertising purposes.

What these contests do is commonly referred to as a "rights grab." The sponsor designs the contest rules so that just by submitting an image—even if you don't win the contest—you grant the sponsor the right to use your image for any purposes without paying you. Therefore, when you submit your beautiful sunset shot to one of these contests, it can end up in a huge advertising campaign and you don't get a dime for it. Some contests add insult to injury by charging you for entering photos.

Read the rules or terms carefully before entering any contest so that you know what rights you are granting to the contest sponsors. The same language as identified above, such as "copyright transfer" or "unlimited license," are clues that the contest sponsors are taking more rights than you may want to grant to them.

Because these rights grabs contests are rampant, the Pro-Imaging organization has prepared a list of rules that it believes are appropriate and fair for photo contests. You can review Pro-Imaging's "Bill of Rights for Competitions" at pro-imaging.org. Pro-Imaging also maintains a list of photo competitions that meet its Bill of Rights standards and a list of those that don't.

Online sharing sites and contests make it fun and easy to share your photos and to get recognition for your work. Just make sure that you don't take uninformed risks that could ruin those rewards.

Don't think that if you've transferred Grandma Sonia's photo albums or Uncle Howard's home movies onto digital files that you've preserved them, says Katie Trainor, head of the Museum of Modern Art archives, a repository of 26,000 films in Hamlin, Pa., just east of Scranton.

"Because of the quick obsolescence of equipment, who knows if new technology will be able to 'play' an old movie in five to 10 years?" Trainor says.

"The physical DVD or CD is not a stable, long-term media for preservation," says Grover Crisp, senior vice president of asset management for Sony Pictures. "One of the few ways to make sure you have files for the future is to constantly access them, make sure they work, and migrate them to newer and, hopefully, better media."

"And don't throw out the original film or photograph," Trainor advises.

In her capacity as cofounder of the Center for Home Movies, Trainor finds that "once people transfer their home movies to digital, they often throw out the original material. But that CD it's stored on might get scratched. So, keep that film or negative, keep it cool and dry."

In praise of photos that capture life in a flash

In this Pulitzer Prize-winning photo from Sept. 7, 1965, a Vietnamese mother and her children wade across a river, fleeing a bombing raid on Qui Nhon by United States aircraft.

Newspapers get in trouble for their choice of photos — the Russell Williams front-page pairing in his favourite outfit and then in military uniform is one example — which amazes me, being a wordster.

I notice that the editor asks in the news meeting every morning, "Are we pictured up?" It's terrifically important that a front page be instantly graphically interesting, a punch in the attention gland for the jaded Toronto reader still searching in the morning for his head which seems to have gone missing as the children howl and the bus to work roars past, untaken.

He doesn't say, "Are we worded up?" because he naturally assumes that great clumps of words are already coming out, like a cement mixer with its funnel aimed at a great big empty.

See, I could just have said "hole." But I didn't. Writers are so special.

But the fact is that even as news photographers rage that their profession is disappearing, they are as crucial as they ever were. Before, you had to paint the news. That's why in art galleries, most portraits show people sitting down. Painting and posing, so dreadfully tiring. Then came photos, TV, colour TV, online, and YouTube and beyond. News photographers are panicked that only moving images can win, that if a skateboarder isn't filmed slamming his crotch directly into a concrete pillar, it might as well not have happened.

PROOF is our annual exhibition of photo-based work by Canadian Emerging Artists.

Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography is a non-profit artist-run centre committed to the advancement of photographic art. We encourage the submission of exhibition proposals from artists in the early stages of their careers for this annual group exhibition. Consistent with our overall programming objectives, this exhibition highlights the work of artists who are innovative in their use of the medium and approach to subject matter. PROOF is not intended to represent a particular theme but rather to reflect a range of current concerns and practices in contemporary Canadian photography.

Deadline for Submissions: November 1, 2010

Please submit:

A maximum of twenty digital images or videos on a CD or DVD representing a recent body of work or a specific project. Digital images should be: RGB, jpeg format no larger than 1024 x 768 pixels at 300 dpi. They should be numbered 01 to 20 (01_tree, 02_house, 03_car etc.) Videos must be submitted as a compressed .avi or .mov file. Gallery 44 does not accept original artwork.
A list of works indicating title, year, medium and dimensions.
An artist's statement or other written description.
A physical description of the proposed exhibition including the number of works, the space required and any unusual installation requirements. (A floor plan of Gallery 44 is available at www.gallery44.org/proof)
A curriculum vitae, or biography.
A self-addressed envelope (SASE) with sufficient return postage. Without an SASE we will not return submission packages and will dispose of submission materials appropriately.

Gallery 44 will take reasonable care with submission materials; however, we cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss to original photographic prints. Gallery 44 does not accept submissions by fax or email. Artists are paid in accordance with the CARFAC Fee Schedule.
